Malaysian karate athlete C. Shahmalarani Chandran has delivered the country’s third gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
Competing in the women’s under-50kg kumite at Toyohashi Gymnasium on 23 September, Shahmalarani faced Hong Kong’s Tsang Yee Ting in the final. After the three-minute bout ended 0–0, Shahmalarani secured the gold through the judges’ decision.
Her journey to the podium saw her defeat Macau’s Fong Man Wai 8–0 in the opening round and Bangladesh’s Saiama Jaman 5–4 in the quarter-final, before overcoming Uzbekistan’s Gulshan Alimardanova 3–2 in the semi-final.
The victory was particularly significant after Shahmalarani had lost to Alimardanova in the final of the 2025 World Karate Championships in Cairo. This time, she turned the result around before going on to claim Asian Games gold.
Her victory adds another gold to Malaysia’s medal tally and marks another major achievement for the national karate team in Aichi-Nagoya. 🇲🇾👏
